Mackenzie Rose Colgan, 37, was taken into custody at her home in the 7300 block of Summit Avenue after detectives from Montgomery County Police’s Major Crimes Division identified her as the suspect.
The incident was reported shortly before 12:15 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, when the infant’s father called 911, claiming Colgan had drowned their child while giving her a bath.
Officers and fire rescue personnel responded to the scene, and the baby was rushed to a nearby hospital, where life-saving efforts were made before the infant was pronounced dead.
Authorities confirmed that the infant’s body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, which will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Colgan, who was arrested at the scene, has been charged with first-degree murder. She is currently being held at the Central Processing Unit awaiting a bond hearing.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the infant’s death.
